Vince Canning, Jr | The Man Behind the Race
After serving as a Marine Sergeant during the Korean War, Vince purchased Vince Canning Shoes from his father in 1957.
While operating the successful business on Atlantic Avenue, Vince spearheaded several social service programs to help those less fortunate.
He founded St. Vincent de Paul Society, which provides basic necessities and alcohol counseling, and Open Your Closets, Open Your Hearts, an annual clothing and shoe drive for migrant workers. Vince spent his off hours volunteering at the Caring Kitchen as well as headed the Delray Beach Halloween Parade for 40 years, and built and staffed the 100’ Christmas Tree.
Vince Canning spent decades giving to those in need, reaching out to all walks, races, and religions.
Among his many philanthropic activities, Vince continuously supports Achievement Centers for Children & Families since its inception.
In reflection of Vince’s unbounded love for his community, the Vince Canning Stiletto Race was created by his niece, LaRonda Denkler, to celebrate Vince Canning Shoes’ 60th year on Atlantic Avenue. The fun and fab fundraiser benefits hundreds of low-income children served by the Achievement Centers and continues the legacy that still permeates the businesses, neighborhoods, and hearts that make up our Village by the Sea.
